Michelle lived a fairly normal life in New Jersey. She always knew she was adopted, but never asked a lot of questions because she was adopted into a loving home when she was only a few months old. But she always felt she was missing something in her life even though she had a husband and children of her own now. Everything changed one day when she saw a video online and found out something shocking about her adoption agency, that led her to take a DNA test that would lead her to find out that she not only had a sister but a twin sister.
It was a hot summer day in New Jersey when Michelle was nervously walking around her kitchen, standing up and sitting down, checking her hair again and again, because later that day she was going to meet her twin sister… for the first time ever.
Well, technically since they were twins, this wasn’t the first time ever to meet, but it was at least the first time since the women were tiny infants of only 5 months old.
She Saw A Story
Three short weeks ago, Michelle didn’t even know that she had a twin. She was on her way to work when she saw a story on social media about triplets who were separated at birth. “My heart started beating really fast when I saw the story,” says Michelle.
A detail she had seen in the story had made her heart pound and she immediately stopped reading and called her husband in almost a panic. On the phone, her husband calmed her down and asked her to explain what had upset her.
She Freaked Out
What she had seen in the story of the triplets was the name of the adoption agency “Louise Wise Services,” because Michelle herself was adopted, but that wasn’t the part that made her freak out.
It was the fact that she was adopted from that very same agency of Louise Wise Services that the separated triplets came from as well. It turns out that the agency separated several sets of twins in those days, and it pushed her to do something she never seriously considered before.
As a person who grew up knowing she was adopted, when she reached adulthood she always had the option to take a DNA test that could reveal some of her biological relatives. But she had never seriously considered doing it.
She always kind of wanted to, but the DNA test can be quite expensive, and more troubling, can reveal complicated family issues that Michelle didn’t feel like she needed to deal with since she was happy in her life.
A Need To Know
But now all that had changed, and she felt a deep-rooted need to take the test and find out if she had biological relatives around. So she took the test and sent away the results. There was nothing left to do but wait.
When she finally got the results, she was so nervous her hands shook as she opened the email. It said in the results “immediate family member match.”
The Initials A.K.
Usually the results will include the name and information about a person, but in this case a name was not available and instead of a name it only provided the initials of this person, “A.K.”
Michelle said, “I was like, oh great, I hada get the ONE person without a name!” and she was disheartened because it wouldn’t be possible to attempt to contact the person without a name.
However, she kept reading and saw that it said something somewhat mysterious. It said the name of a person who was known to be associated with “A.K.” and Michelle went straight to facebook.
“I started stalking Facebook,” recalls Michelle. Right away I found one profile I was drawn to and I see that this person is married to someone named Allison Karper,” or “A.K.” and I clicked on her profile.
She Saw Her Photo And Knew
“I saw her profile photo and I almost fainted,” says Michelle. It was like she was looking at a photo of herself, even though she hadn’t seen the face before. At first, she didn’t believe it could be true, but then she looked at the rest of the profile.
She saw this woman’s birthday was the same date as her own, and then she knew right away that it was true.
Michelle literally fell out of her chair from the shock of it. Her son was home at the time and he rushed into the room to see what was wrong with his mother.
“She was hysterical,” says her son Andrew, “I thought something terrible had happened until I saw her face and could see she was happy and excited. It’s just so crazy. I knew she was adopted and assumed she had a family but THIS… I never expected this.”
A Lost Sister
Indeed, it is one thing to find out about a lost sibling, but a lost twin is enough to rattle a person to their core. So Andrew helped her compose a message to send to Allison.
It wasn’t an easy task to write the first message. Michelle laughed with tears in her eyes, “like what are you supposed to say? ‘Hi, my name is Michelle I think we might be twins, wanna grab a coffee?’”
But in the end, they found the right words and with both their hearts pounding they hit send. Michelle nervously checked her inbox only 5 minutes later but was disappointed to see there was no reply.
She kept checking every few minutes that day, but to her dismay, there was still no reply. The next day she checked and she could see that Allison had been online recently, but had chosen not to reply to the message.
Doesn’t Want To Connect
Michelle was heartbroken. It would appear that her long lost twin did not share her desire to reconnect after all these years. After one week, she had accepted that her sister did not wish to know her.
She debated if she should send her another message, or try to comment on one of her posts instead when suddenly she got a notification that Allison sent a reply!
Her Final Anwer
Allison started off by saying sorry that she didn’t see the message earlier, it had gone to her “other” folder in her Facebook inbox and though she had been online she hadn’t seen the message until now. What she said next made Michelle’s stomach drop.
She said she would be delighted to set up a meeting, and they chose a location nearby to both of them since they didn’t live that far apart.
Got Up Before The Sun
The day finally came and Michelle woke up long before her alarm and got up to pace anxiously, checking her watch every few minutes until finally it was time and she packed up her purse and she, with her son and husband went to the hotel where they were supposed to meet.
She was feeling guarded and worried perhaps the most that her sister wouldn’t like her. “I just kept imagining what it would have been like growing up with her.
What Could Have Been
“We would have been ‘the twins’ and I’m sure we would have been popular just because of that fact alone! But instead in high school I just had bad hair and was definitely not popular.”
She remembered growing up as a teenager only with her adopted brothers and no sisters. She tried to imagine what Allison’s life was like in high school and decided that’s the first thing she would ask her when they finally met.
A Stranger To Me
“I mean she’s a stranger to me, and yet she’s so much a part of me… we shared a womb together. I want to know what her life was like growing up. I was hoping and praying that we would be alike.”
Michelle hoped that her sister had also grown up in a happy home and that they had similar upbringings so that it would be easy to relate to her and get to know her.
Michelle and her family were the first to arrive. “I hope she gets here soon and I won’t have to wait any longer. I’m dying to see her,” Michelle said while she was pacing the room impatiently. But her son Andrew had different plans in mind.
Andrew slipped quietly away downstairs to the lobby, where Allison, his biological aunt was just coming through the doors along with her husband.
He intercepted her at the door, he said: “hey, sorry to ambush you like this but I just wanted to let you know my mom is upstairs and she is so excited to meet you!”
He just wanted to make sure that she was ready to meet his mom and soften the blow a little by meeting her first. The two embraced in a warm hug, which felt like the most natural thing in the world. Then they headed up together to see Michelle.
Two Peas In A Pod
Like Michelle, Alison was having very similar thoughts about how she felt robbed of her “true life” as a twin. And this was only the beginning of the list of ways that the two women were very similar.
“I’m dying to meet her already,” she said, using almost exactly the same words that her twin sister had used a few minutes ago upstairs while waiting for her to arrive.
Adopted Days Apart
While still talking on facebook they had discussed how they got separated and when they might have been together while they were babies. Michelle had been placed with a family on October 14th.
Allison had been placed in a different home on October 16th, two full days after her sister had been adopted. “It’s really messed up,” says Michelle. “And you think too, like what would have happened if I had gone to her family and she had gone to mine.”
“I Don’t Understand”
“I just don’t know how can they do that to people… separating twins like that is awful, I still don’t understand why they separated us.”
It seems that in those days it was common to separate siblings without even telling the adoptive parents. But at least today they will be able to reunite and finally get to know each other and live the life they were meant to live- together.
The First Look
When she entered the room the women looked at each other for a brief moment before running to embrace in a big hug that was so sweet it had the whole room in tears just to witness it.
“Hi!” Michelle said simply, and laughing. “Hi back!” said Allison. They quickly realized that they looked a lot alike… and they were exactly the same height when Michelle took off her high-heeled shoes she had worn for the occasion.
They laughed over the fact that they have the same arms. “And show me your hands,” Said Allison. “Oh my gosh,” she exclaimed, “you have tiny little hands just like mine, they look the same!”
“I think I’m gona pass out!” Michelle said. They continued discussing all the things they had in common. “I love your outfit,” and indeed they were dressed in a similarly fashionable way.
The Childhood They Lost
They discussed all the ways they were the same and all the ways they were different. They discovered for example they both love art and music, but neither of them are artists themselves.
They discussed their childhood and how they both grew up with a sense that something was always incomplete in their lives, that something was missing but they could never define what it was until now.
There was no denying it, the women looked very much alike, both in physical appearance as well as in personal style. Michelle told her sister, “it’s not like I NEEDED you to look like me, but seeing that you do look like me makes me so happy, and so mad.”
She told her sister about her theory about ‘twin popularity.’ Both of the women were hugely relieved to see that they were getting along great and they had the rest of their lives to get to know each other.
Plans For The Future
Right away they made plans to see each other again and go hang out in the city. “It’s still so weird! I wake up every morning feeling so good and I just say to myself, “oh yeah, I have a twin!” Like how does someone get used to that?”
But after a few days of being together, they are already becoming inseparable, sharing family dinners and making up for the lost time. “I’m indescribably happy,” says Michelle. “Next to the day my kids were born, the day I met my twin sister was the best day of my life.”
