The “forest city” is the first of its kind and will be located in the north of Liuzhou, in the mountain area of Guangxi, in the southern part of China, along the Liujiang river. Designed by Stefano Boeri Archietti, the city will be covered in approximately 1 million plants and 40,000 trees. Designers predict that amount of greenery can absorb nearly 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants and produce approximately 900 tons of oxygen each year .
Commissioned by the Liuzhou Municipality Urban Planning, the Liuzhou Forest City will span 175-hectares and will be able to house 30,000 people in the buildings that will be covered in plants. The buildings will mirror the “vertical forests“Archietti has designed in the past. (China has already signed on for Archietti to design vertical forests in the cities of Nanjing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.)
The city will run completely on renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy will be used for interior air-conditioning and solar panels will be placed on the roofs.
According to a press release from Archietti, “The diffusion of plants, not only in the parks and gardens or along the streets, but also over building facades, will allow the energy self-sufficient city to contribute to improve the air quality (absorbing both CO2 and fine dust of 57 tons per year), to decrease the average air temperature, to create noise barriers and to improve the biodiversity of living species, generating the habitat for birds, insects and small animals that inhabit the Liuzhou territory.”
The city will include not only residential areas, but also commercial and recreational spaces, as well as 2 schools and a hospital. The Liuzhou Forest City will be connected to the existing city’s urban area via a fast rail line used by electric cars.
The forest city is slated to by complete in 2020.
