For many, summer is a favorite time of the year. Whether it’s trips to the beach or backyard barbecues, summer usually means we’ll be spending a lot more time in the outdoors. While the fresh air and sunshine are welcome benefits, mosquitoes are not. The truth is, the pesky little bloodsuckers aren’t going anywhere. While there are plenty of sprays and other commercial products to keep mosquitos at bay, there are also some things you can do around your house to cut down on the number of mosquitos you get in the first place. Here are some natural ways to keep the mosquitoes away from your home this summer.
One of the biggest steps you can take in eliminating mosquitoes around your house is to remove as much standing water as you can. Mosquitos will lay eggs in stagnant water, and they don’t need very much to get the job done. Bird baths, empty buckets, garbage can lids, and even your pets’ water bowls are all breeding ground for mosquitoes. Eliminate these items and you’re already reducing the number of mosquitoes around your property.
You can also keep mosquitoes away simply by planting a few of the right herbs or flowers around your property. If you already have a garden, consider adding herbs like mint, basil, lavender, rosemary, or lemon balm. If you love flowers, try adding some marigolds to your collection and you’ll naturally be adding mosquito repellents.
At first glance, it might sound crazy, but installing bat houses in your backyard is a great way to keep the mosquitoes away. You can purchase bat houses or build your own, but once the bats move in and the sun starts to go down you can sit back and watch the show. The mosquitos won’t stand a chance.
One of the easiest things you can do to keep mosquitoes away from you while sitting on your porch or pool deck is to crank up the fan. Mosquitoes don’t like breezes because they actually can’t fly all that well. By keeping the air around you circulating at a good clip, you’re creating a kind of wind tunnel barrier that mosquitoes won’t want any part of.
